ELMIRA – The Chemung County Clerk’s Office, in collaboration with the Schuyler County Clerk’s Office and the County’s Veterans’ Services Departments is reaching out to businesses and merchants to encourage participation in a new discount program designed to recognize and thank military Veterans for their service and sacrifices to our country.
The “Return the Favor” Discount Program – (Find and Assist Veterans of Record) offers honorably discharged Veterans discounts at local businesses upon presentation of proof of service in the form of a FAVOR identification card. The identification card, issued by the County Clerk’s office at no fee to the Veteran, contains valid service information. Veterans can obtain the photo ID card at the Chemung County Clerk’s office beginning July 5th. The application and additional information can be found on each of the County’s websites.
“What a wonderful way for our business community to honor our veterans for their service,” said Katie Hughes, Chemung County Clerk. “Another benefit to the Veteran, by filing their separation papers at the Clerk’s office the Veteran and their families will always be able to locate these important documents.”
“While there are many groups and individuals that make sacrifices or have endured hardships, our veterans epitomize the concept of service to our country. I am thrilled to partner with Chemung County and our local businesses in recognizing and paying tribute to our veterans,” added Linda Compton, Schuyler County Clerk.
Many businesses will be receiving a letter in the coming weeks asking if they would like to participate in the program. The discount or offering by a merchant, restaurant, or service company is of the owner's own choosing and is not determined by the County. Examples of possible discounts include a discounted fee for a service or product, a percentage off the total bill, a weekly special, or a free item with purchase.
The County will provide a window decal identifying the business as a “Return the Favor” participating business. A full listing of all businesses participating in the program will be maintained on the County’s websites and will be updated as new businesses are added or discounts are revised.
“This is an easy way that our county can recognize our returning veterans,” said Tom Santulli, Chemung County Executive. “It provides an opportunity for retailers to say thank you and also to increase foot traffic to their place of business.”
“We can’t do enough to express our gratitude and pay a tribute to area veterans. Chemung County’s ‘Return the Favor’ program offers a great benefit for veterans and local businesses, and I’m confident it will be a great success,” said State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats).
Information on the program can be found on the County's websites.
