“Residents Urged to Apply for Disaster Assistance”

Chemung County- Chemung County Executive Tom Santulli and Michael Smith, Chemung County Director of Fire and Emergency Management, urge Chemung County residents affected by recent flooding as a result of Tropical Storm Lee to register with the FEMA Helpline.  The deadline to register is November 14, 2011.

In addition, FEMA opened a Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) in Wellsburg today to assist those affected by Tropical Storm Lee and flooding. People who have already applied do not need to go to the center. However, if individuals do not want to call or go online, or have difficulty getting through, they can register at the DRC. Also, if they have any questions on the process or have received a denial letter, there are people at the center who can help. The center is located at the Village Center at 3677 E. Fifth St. and is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

“It is imperative for individuals or businesses that experienced damage or loss to call the FEMA Helpline prior to the deadline to become registered,” said Smith.  “You will then receive an SBA loan application which is a key part of the FEMA registration process. This form in no way commits you to a loan,” added Smith.

FEMA uses this application to determine what various types of assistance individuals will be eligible to receive. FEMA officials are advising individuals to not be discouraged if they receive a denial letter to their application. A common reason for denial is that all required information has not been provided, such as, they have not provided a letter from their insurance company stating what, if any, insurance coverage they have to cover their loss. Applicants should read the denial letter thoroughly and contact FEMA with any questions.

There is no timetable for flood victims to receive assistance money but individuals must register by November 14, 2011. FEMA is processing applications as quickly as possible.

The FEMA Helpline can be reached at (800) 621-3362. The toll-free line is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.

People with speech disabilities can use the TTY number, (800) 462-7585. Applicants can also register at www.disasterassistance.gov or with any web-enabled mobile device at m.fema.gov. Follow the link to “apply online for federal assistance.”
